What do flies look like?
North America has more than 18,000 species of flies. Flies have extremely short lives, with most having a lifespan of about 21 days. During this brief period, they undergo multiple shapes and stages, including eggs, larvae, and flies. A baby fly is called a larva or maggot.
Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are tiny flies with bright red eyes. They're oval-shaped, tan, and have wings, six legs, and antennae.
Fruit flies live about nine days and feeds on decaying fruits and vegetables. They're also attracted to garbage.
House Flies
These relatively large flies have gray or black bodies, six legs, clear wings, and antennae.
House flies have a lifespan of two weeks to 25 days.
They are called house flies due to their habit of infesting homes. House flies taste with their feet and seek out sugar. In fact, their feet are ten million times more sensitive to sweets than human tongues. When they find food, they use their tongues like straws to suck it up into their mouths. House flies feed on decaying matter and pet waste.
Blow flies
Blow flies are characterized by metallic-colored bodies, transparent wings, and short antennae. Male flies have short, wispy hairs.
The typical lifespan of blow flies is three to four weeks.
Blow flies are attracted to dead animals, decaying meat, and plants that emit an odor similar to rotting flesh.
When are flies most active?
When are flies most active?
Flies are most active during the day and prefer temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees, which makes Jacksonville's climate perfect for them. When the temperatures drop below 45 degrees, or at night, flies become inactive and can be seen resting on ceilings, around poultry houses, and other surfaces, waiting for the sun and warmer temperatures to return.
What attracts flies?
Flies are attracted to various odors and food sources that most find disgusting. Human and animal feces, rotting meat, and decaying animals are attractants. Flies are also attracted to overripe fruit, alcohol, spilled soda, or juice; they can also be found near garbage as they search for their next meal.
Are flies dangerous?
Many people consider flies to be an irritating household nuisance that we simply swat away and kill with a fly swatter. However, when flies come into contact with garbage, animal or human waste, and then transfer those germs to our food preparation surfaces and the food itself, they can transmit over 100 disease-causing bacteria.
Flies can spread diseases such as Tuberculosis, Dysentery, Diarrhea, food-borne illnesses, and Typhoid. They leave behind excrement and vomit on everything they land on and consume, posing a potential threat to human health.
